Explaining Medical Imaging to Your Patients
For some patients, medical imaging procedures may be something they are unfamiliar with, especially if we start to move beyond the conventional x-ray or ultrasound. Part of being a medical professional is being able to properly impart the knowledge so the patients understand the reasons and benefits for getting a procedure done. This not only makes them more compliant, but it builds a trust in you for future areas.
The easiest way to start with the explanation is framing the conversation in terms of benefits, especially if they are concerned about the procedures. Medical imaging largely came out in order to avoid more invasive procedures for diagnostic purposes. Not only do these alternatives have more risk involved, but they are also more time-consuming and expensive. Your goal here is not to scare people, but to inform them.
Another conversation you may want to have with your patients, if they express concern, is about the radiation levels associated with medical imaging. As a start, digital radiography gives off a lot less radiation, but even in the case of conventional radiography, the levels are too low to give major concerns. However, you can try to limit the amount of scans done if your patient still has concerns.
Medical imaging is often a part of the regular healthcare regimen for a lot of different patients. This makes it especially important that you take the proper time to explain medical imaging as needed. This isn’t just the purpose of the imaging, but the type of equipment that you are using and why you are using it over some of the other options. Some patients with a little bit of medical knowledge or more concerns may be naturally inquisitive, which means you need to be quick to explain things.
