Moving Towards Digital Radiography
Even though the transformation of digital radiography (DR) has taken place over the past two decades, transitioning from your existing x-ray system to digital is thankfully a much faster process. DR, the latest advancement in radiography, consists of using a digital x-ray detector to acquire medical images and transfer those images to a computer for viewing purposes.
As a whole, DR is faster, more efficient and cost-effective, higher-quality, and lower dose as compared to other x-ray technologies. Indeed, the benefits of DR are plentiful. For example, digital flat panel detectors typically fit most standard bucky trays, and offer advanced features such as stitching, DICOM modality worklist, and procedure cod mapping—to name a few. While the upfront costs of DR may be higher, the overall cost of ownership of a DR panel is lower than that of a computed radiography (CR) reader. Additionally, changes in healthcare reimbursement has incentivized medical professionals to make the change to digital.
Other reasons to make the switch include the following:
- Converting your practice from CR to DR can reduce radiation dose by 30% or greater
- Improvement of overall quality and throughput.
- Faster image acquisition can lead to reduced exam time, which can be even more of a vital factor in the instance of trauma or other critically ill patients.
- DR systems give you the option to go wireless. This means freely positioned exposures, better workflow, better image quality, and nearly instant imaging are possible.
- The switch can also be a healthy balance between cost and utilization. Scaling back on overall equipment while also increasing volume of patient exams.
