Why is the biggest element of chiropractic care x-ray diagnostic testing?

Imaging diagnostics help identify the source of the pain.
In order for Chiropractors to fully understand the condition and come up with an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment plan, they must first determine with precision what the condition or injury is internally. Chiropractors rely on a variety of imaging diagnostic techniques in order to fully understand what is occurring in the patient’s musculoskeletal system.

X-rays allow the chiropractor to identify the underlying reasons for Chiropractic care.
X-rays are one of the most widely used diagnostic tools in chiropractic care. Chiropractic has a long association with the use of spinal x-rays in clinical practice. Early x-ray technology was incorporated within chiropractic clinical examinations as far back as 1910, with the purpose of visualizing the alignment of spinal vertebrae and direct appropriate treatment. An x-ray will give the chiropractor a clearer view of the patient’s health and allow him to determine how the condition needs to be treated and if there are any complications that need to be addressed beforehand. Since chiropractic care is free of any sort of surgery, an x-ray can show a chiropractor exactly what is happening in the body in terms of the musculoskeletal system, spinal alignment and structure so the chiropractic practitioner can take care of the problem using spinal adjustments and other techniques that involve movement of skeletal components with the hands or with the use of an instrument.

Spinal x-rays are recommended on an initial chiropractic evaluation to:

  • Diagnose past or recent trauma or fracture
  • Identify any spinal degeneration
  • Monitor any spinal deformity and its possible progression
  • Identify the presence of scar tissue or arthritis
  • Identify serious conditions present, such as scoliosis, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, and many other treatable conditions.

When used appropriately, x-rays can help identify and/or rule out specific pathology and help guide appropriate treatment.
